I wanted to write something about reality. Sometimes I like God a little bit more and he is less confusing when life is really difficult. It's easy to mean what I say when I absolutely need God. .. when things won't happen, won't change, won't get better, won't be, unless He does something. We say words like "grace".. there 's this song I was listening to. It went "thank you for your love, thank you for your grace"... blah blah blah something something, then the word "face." So maybe the guy used grace because it rhymed with face. No crime there, but WHAT DOES HIS SONG MEAN? I am a little bit opposed to pretty songs that have sweet arrangements and generic phrases. I like the ones with awkwardnesses.. real things.. like "thank you that I'm not a drunk anymore" or "thanks that I didn't die while I drove reckless like a banchee." Serious. I was listening to someone talk about some stories in the Bible. He wasn't doing a deep Greek/Hebrew exigetical break down, he was just ... talking, yet everything he said communicated to me.
Let me try again. How's this:
Hey, how's it going?
Great.
Yeah?
Oh yeah. Doing good. Getting stuff done. It's all good.
Nice.
You?
Oh yeah, great great. You know just doing life. it's awesome.
How much have we learned about these people? Nothing. Well, that's not true. We've learned that they aren't willing to articulate what is going on in their lives.. but I diverge. How about this:
Hey, how's it going?
Well, good. I mean, I yelled at my kids today but I absolutely love them so I'm torn, but I repented to them and to God and I spent some special time holding them today. Sure hope they turn out ok.
Yeah?
Yeah. You?
Well, I used to be a total bag to my family but I realized it and now I'm changing and trying to to be so selfish with my time, so I'd say it's pretty good.
HAH! so much meaning. So when people talk about God and they say "I'm thankful for his grace" it holds no meaning for me. Well, very little. It's like being in physics class where the teacher was saying all these words (in addition to talking about Star Trek which I knew nothing about and making fun of the 1 girl that had the guts to take his class) and I knew the meaning of the words, but when he strung them along in a sentence and I had to gather it all together and come out with understanding, well, it was a no-go. It's like singing songs in church. Sing sing sing sing, yada yada pretty songs, beautiful BUT WHAT DO THEY MEAN? I would get sued for trampling on copyrights when I sing. Mostly I make up my own words, or hum, or add little "I want to know more" or "show me how you are..."
Not that I want to go around telling everyone my business all the time, but if I am going to use words, I want them to mean something, and if I am going to quote things about God, I want to know what they mean and have people know what I mean by them when I use them. If we just have words and not reality, we are hooped. So.. life is just more beautiful when the words we use.. well, it's like shaking hands with the air instead of actually touching people. If our words are based on reality, they will have an impact. If we're just using them, we become like our money system today: a piece of paper that, when it comes down to it and everything crashes down, is virtually worthless. We're just trading papers. Give me gold any day.
